The Big Sonic Heaven 7 is 7 questions we ask our favorite bands.
This time we asked No Romance…

1. Where are you from/based?

We are made up of 2 Kiwis, a Californian, and a Brit, based in Berlin.

2. Give us a brief history of the band.

We started jamming together in summer 2019. We met through mutual friends and none of us had played music with others in a little while and wanted to have some fun playing around. The jams soon turned into songs and it evolved organically from there!

3. What are your influences and/or describe your sound.

We all pull from super diverse tastes. At the beginning it was difficult to marry them; Isaac having played in heavier punk bands and Lucy with a more singer-songwriter vibe. But we’ve started to find our groove now, and the sound has developed into something more cohesive. I think these differences in influences actually benefits our writing. We also have loads of crossover with bands like Cocteau Twins, Happy Mondays, Life Without Buildings, and more contemporary artists like Shygirl, Sega Bodega, and we all love the new Billie Eilish record!

4. What is your current release? Tell us about it.

Our debut EP ‘Unfold” was recorded in autumn 2020, just as we were going into our winter lockdown. The songs were written between January and July that year, and lyrically they document Lucy’s breakup in a linear format. The EP opens whilst still in the relationship, and tracks it breaking down, and eventually the process of rediscovery of self. It ends with the title track Unfold; a song full of optimism and hope and excitement for the unknown, newly single.

5. Tell us something funny or shocking about the band.

Joel eats an egg for luck before every gig!

6. What’s the best thing about being in a band?

Playing music with great friends! That feels great.

7. What’s next? Are you touring?

We are recording again soon, and are looking to put out more music in early 2022. Unfortunately, no tours booked yet, but hopefully in 2022 movement will be less restrictive and we can get on the road! We can’t wait… tentatively!
